About This Title

This is a regional novelty record from 1970 that tells the tale of London Ontario’s title of Speed City (and no, we aren’t talking fast cars here). Jim Ashby was a DJ at a London radio station at the time and decided to write and record a song about what was happening and this is the end result. The A side is the electric version of the song and is the tamer of the two sides of this single. But flip it over and be prepared to get your mind blown as voices and crazy sound effects fade in and out as Jim Ashby strums along on his acoustic guitar and takes us on a voyage through to the depths of Speed City. And it ain’t no pretty sight as Jim tells us in this song that could easily have been part of the soundtrack to a long forgotten, grade Z, ‘60s counter culture flick. Every once in awhile Jim Ashby plays a live show and if you ask nicely, he’ll play Speed City for you.
