Mister Tony’s
100 Cumberland Street · Toronto, Canada
Mister Tony’s was founded in 1969 to fill the need for a uniquely special, varied type of food service in Toronto. In two years, Tony’s became one of Toronto’s finest speciality restaurants and earned a reputation second to none.
In addition to offering a distinctive variety of gourmet foods, Mister Tony’s began to focus its attention on entertainment when it was realized that a superior restaurant needs to broaden its scope to offer the best in entertainment as well as the finest in cuisine.
Through the talents of many outstanding performers – notably Mister Tony’s own singing, Scott (Slim) Williams, vocalists Corrie Adams, Wilma McGuinness, George Oliver, comedians Baird and Clark, Bill Wilson, and others – the club became a showcase for many well-known Toronto entertainers.
A special part of this entertainment scene was, and continues to be, provided by the Bill Butler Trio: Bill Butler (piano), Wally Ewanski (bass), Mickey Shannon (drums). Bill, who has played in major clubs in Toronto and across Canada, is one of the most respected pianists in the country. A native of Toronto, Bill is well known from his television appearances, CBC, Arthur Godfrey and Dave Garroway shows, and his own recordings. Bill’s style, which blends jazz, pop, and easy listening in a distinctive manner, has made him a favourite with a wide audience.
The record you are holding is a fine example of the Bill Butler Trio’s wide range of musical talents and the kind of listening to be expected nightly at Mister Tony’s.
This recording is just one more added memory to the successful history of Mister Tony’s and its talented artists. The management of Mister Tony’s (and its owners Attilio and Anita Dirisio) hope you, the listener, will be pleased to join in our memories.
Mister Tony’s – An Occasion to Remember
One of Canada’s foremost pianists, well known from CBC TV shows and recordings, Bill Butler once again demonstrates his versatility and superb touch. This recording, made at Mister Tony’s, features Bill in a selection of well-known swinging tunes as well as ballads and bossa novas.
Touch is the word for Bill’s easy manner with a melody. It can be soft, as in “Love Story” or “Here, There & Everywhere”, or it can swing, as in “String of Pearls” and “Satin Doll”.
For many years, Bill has only one occasion in mind: an occasion to remember – and this recording is exactly that – an occasion to remember for the many hours of listening pleasure it will provide.
