Information/Write-up
Tommy Makem (1932–2007), the Irish singer, songwriter, and storyteller best known for his work with the Clancy Brothers, forged a special bond with Canada during the early 1970s. While he made his permanent home in Dover, New Hampshire, Makem spent several years working out of Vancouver, British Columbia, where he co-hosted the CBC series It’s a Musical World (1973–1975). This weekly program, filmed in Vancouver, blended traditional music and storytelling and helped deepen his connection with Canadian audiences.
During this period he also recorded and released a string of Canadian singles that highlighted his affinity for the country. These included “Vancouver” (1971), a tribute to the city; “The Sky Boat Song” (1972); and “Farewell to Nova Scotia” (1973), which quickly became associated with his Canadian performances. He also issued the live album Recorded Live – A Room Full of Song (1973), released in Canada through Columbia/Bard, capturing the energy of his shows at the time.
Though Makem returned to New Hampshire as his permanent base, his Canadian ties remained strong. He frequently appeared on television alongside Ryan’s Fancy and The Irish Rovers, both filmed in Canada, and toured extensively from coast to coast. These projects, combined with his Canadian singles and television presence, established Makem as an “honorary Canadian” within the folk community—a performer who celebrated Canadian songs and cities while bringing Irish traditions to a new audience.
