Information/Write-up
This was The Paupers’ first U.S. major-label single and their breakthrough in Canada — "If I Call You By Some Name" became a major hit at home. Around this time, Adam Mitchell joined the band, replacing Bill Marion, just before they traveled to New York to record with producer Rick Shorter.
"If I Call You By Some Name" was a gentle, melodic ballad — a sound very different from the wild psychedelia the band was about to unleash. Written by Shorter (not the band), the song climbed into the Canadian Top 10 in early 1967 and helped secure major bookings, including New York’s Cafe Au Go Go and eventually the Monterey Pop Festival.
While the single gave them national exposure, it was something of a blessing and a curse — The Paupers were aiming to be a progressive psychedelic band, but the pop success of "If I Call You By Some Name" temporarily softened their image.
