Information/Write-up
Incognito were Vancouver blues veterans whose sound leaned hard into the “rough and tough” side of blues-rock. Formed by guitarist and bandleader Rob Montgomery (ex-Barrelhouse Blues Band) with singer/harpist Sherman “Tank” Doucette, bassist Bob Popowich (ex-Six Cylinder), and drummer Bob Woods (a 16-year veteran of Matt Minglewood’s band), the group carried a raw, Chicago-influenced energy. Their self-titled 1992 debut, recorded at Sierra Studios and Fluid Sound, mixed seven originals with choice cuts from Muddy Waters, Sonny Boy Williamson, and Roosevelt Sykes.
Incognito became fixtures at venues like the Fairview and Maximum Blues Pub, even cutting a jingle for Grower’s Cider and gaining radio traction with “Hot Blues and Cold Beer” and “Train Comin’.” Over nearly a decade, they released four albums (1992–2001) while keeping the scene alive with their jam sessions and gritty live shows. With Montgomery’s fiery fretwork at the helm, Incognito embodied Vancouver’s brand of barroom blues: a little raw, a little rock, and always ready to make the dance floor sweat.
