Biography
Herald Nix has long been one of the most respected artists in the Canadian underground music scene. Ten years before people started talking about ‘alt country’, Herald Nix was writing and playing music that drew on deep roots. Nix’s stoical detachment makes a song of disillusionment sound epic; yet honed over the years, with hundreds of live performances, his songs carry no excess baggage.
Nix's guitar playing is uncategorizable. Using fingers and slide together, he evokes bottleneck blues and pedal-steel styles; his recent solo work winds psychedelic loops of abstracted fiddle tunes into acoustic guitar originals. In music, Herald Nix is self-taught. His formal training is in visual arts from what is now Emily Carr University in Vancouver. Nix has a painting practice that parallels his musical ability and style. As a visual artist, Nix is represented by Jarvis Hall in Calgary, AB and Wilding Cran in Los Angeles, CA.
