Biography

The Ruby’s were a Montréal rock and dance band formed in the early 1960s. Their only album, Let’s Dance with The Ruby’s, was released by Olympia in 1964 and featured Gilles Lambert on guitar, Raymond Perrier on bass guitar, Gilles Bertrand on saxophone and Claude Langevin on drums.

The album drew heavily from the rhythm-and-blues, rock and dance repertoire of the period, with versions of songs associated with James Brown, Chuck Berry, Ray Charles and other popular performers. ‘Ho Down’, credited to Richard Jourdan, is the album’s only original composition.

‘The Ruby’s Twist’ is credited on the record to Raymond Perrier, although our friends at Mondo P.Q. have identified the performance as a variation of ‘You Can’t Sit Down’, a 1963 hit for The Dovells.

The Ruby’s continued performing after the album, briefly adopting the name Appolo 21 in 1969 before returning to The Ruby’s name and remaining active into the early 1970s.
