Biography:
Hypno-Gogo were a Saskatchewan new wave and dance-rock band that emerged from Regina in the early 1980s, blending synthesizer-driven pop with guitar-based rock influences. At a time when prairie bands were increasingly experimenting with electronic textures and commercial pop songwriting, Hypno-Gogo developed a sound that drew from the emerging international new wave movement while remaining rooted in the regional club circuit of Western Canada.
The group’s best-known lineup consisted of Jim Galloway (guitar, lead vocals), Wayne Young (keyboards, vocals), Dale Luedtke (guitar), and Gregg Pretty (drums). With Young’s synthesizers and Galloway’s melodic guitar work at the centre of their arrangements, the band combined electronic rhythm textures with accessible pop hooks and a polished dance-rock feel typical of the mid-1980s era.
In 1984 Hypno-Gogo won Saskatchewan’s Battle of the Bands, an event presented by Prince Albert’s 99FM radio station. The victory resulted in the release of the band’s first and only known single, the independently issued ‘In Your Eyes’ b/w ‘Flashing’, catalogued as WRC3-3646 and recorded at Studio West Canada. The record showcased the group’s sleek new wave sound, pairing the melodic synth-pop of ‘In Your Eyes’ with the darker, more atmospheric track ‘Flashing’, written by Galloway.
Following the success of the competition, Hypno-Gogo gained further exposure through their inclusion on the 1985 double-LP compilation Saskatchewan After Dark, a major regional showcase of artists recorded primarily at Studio West in Pike Lake, Saskatchewan. Their contribution, ‘Down In The Docks’, featured a slightly different lineup with Robin Froese (bass) and Cam Kushnir (drums) alongside Galloway and Young. The track reflected the band’s evolving sound, leaning toward a broader synth-pop and commercial rock style.
During this period the group spent time performing beyond Saskatchewan, including appearances on the Winnipeg club circuit where they built a reputation as an energetic dance band performing a mixture of contemporary hits and original material.
Although Hypno-Gogo never progressed beyond a handful of recordings, their work represents a small but vivid snapshot of the prairie new wave scene of the mid-1980s, when regional radio competitions, studio showcases, and compilation albums helped emerging bands gain exposure across Western Canada.
After the band dissolved later in the decade, Jim Galloway and Wayne Young continued working together musically and later formed the Winnipeg-based rock group White Heat, which released the album We Never Heard of You Either and the single ‘Crazy For You’ in 1989.
