Biography
André Breton was born on July 1, 1934, in Sherbrooke, in Québec’s Eastern Townships, and spent his life within the close-knit cultural world of the region. He came of age during a period when small vocal ensembles were a fixture of Québec variety entertainment, and Breton found his artistic identity as a member of Le Trio Chansonnette, a harmony-driven group active through the 1950s and early 1960s.
Le Trio Chansonnette belonged to the tradition of post-war Québec chanson trios — intimate vocal groups that performed regional songs, French standards, and light popular repertoire for community halls, cabarets, and local radio. Breton’s warm voice and steady musicality helped anchor the trio’s sound, and the group became a familiar presence in the Eastern Townships’ modest but lively circuit of cultural events, parish concerts, and seasonal festivals.
Although the trio did not leave widely distributed commercial recordings, their activity reflects the fabric of the era: a time when regional artists sustained an important musical culture outside Montréal’s growing industry. Breton remained connected to this world until his passing on September 18, 1992, remembered locally for his involvement in one of the Eastern Townships’ small but enduring vocal groups.
