Biography
Magik were a Winnipeg, Manitoba hard rock trio made up of Phil O’Connell, Ray Auld, and Wade Gargan. Gargan had earlier roots in Manitoba’s late-1960s psychedelic rock scene as drummer for The Lyme, whose 1969 single “Measles” / “I’m Only Dreaming” was produced by Randy Bachman. Magik’s own recorded output appears to centre on their 1981 self-titled LP for Rayne Records and the related single “Just Like Yesterday” / “You’re The One.” Recorded at Wayne Finucan Studios and engineered by Howard Rissin, the album presented eleven original songs written and arranged by the band, placing Magik among the lesser-documented but musically substantial Canadian hard rock acts of the early 1980s.
Engineer Howard Rissin was also part of a much broader Canadian recording story, with credits extending across rock, pop, folk, children’s music, and major-label releases. His work on Magik connects the album to the active Winnipeg and western Canadian studio scene of the period.
