This collection brings together rare recordings of Indigenous music from coastal British Columbia, including songs of the Haida, Kwakwaka’wakw and Nuu-chah-nulth peoples. At its centre are four landmark Folkways collections assembled by Canadian ethnomusicologist Dr. Ida Halpern, who recorded respected singers and cultural leaders such as Mungo Martin, Billy Assu, Florence Davidson, George Clutesi, Peter Webster, Fred Louis and Ella Thompson. The recordings preserve love songs, potlatch and feast songs, ceremonial cycles, paddle songs, mourning songs, children’s songs and other traditions, accompanied principally by voice and drum. Contemporary Haida songs by Terri-Lynn Williams-Davidson, Bill Henderson, and Claire Lawrence demonstrate how these musical and cultural traditions continue to inspire new artistic expression.
