Liner notes:
ANNE OF GREEN GABLES
When Anne Of Green Gables premiered at the Charlottetown Festival in August of 1965, it was an immediate success. Chairs had to be placed in the aisles to accommodate the more than 15,000 people who packed the Confederation Centre Theatre each night of the run. Even the New York Times proclaimed: “MUSICAL VERSION OF NOVEL IS BIG HIT.”

The novel referred to in the Times headline is, of course, Lucy Maud Montgomery’s beloved book of the same title which recounts the adoption of Anne Shirley by bachelor-farmer Mathew Cuthbert and his spinster sister Marilla. Mathew and Marilla had expected a boy from the orphanage but who can resist the romantic, wide-eyed and exuberant Anne? The musical and the novel relate the many adventures of Anne of Green Gables, the green and white farmhouse of the Cuthberts in the lovely, rolling countryside of Prince Edward Island.

The musical version of Anne Of Green Gables was commissioned in 1964 for the Charlottetown Festival by Mavor Moore. Its Artistic Director, Donald Harron, celebrated Canadian actor and writer, and Norman Campbell, composer and television producer, set about the task of writing a fresh and contemporary musical version of Anne which would, as Norman put it, :make the audience walk out of the theatre whistling the tunes." And as the Charlottetown audiences discovered, not only did the composer succeed, but Anne herself had been transformed into a vivacious, exuberant character.

After its third season as the sensation of the theatrical season, the musical version of Anne Of Green Gables has attracted worldwide attention. The musical story of Anne… the red-headed orphan adopted by the Cuthberts of Green Gables… has been admired and enjoyed by thousands as the Charlottetown Festival’s major production each summer. The musical version of Anne Of Green Gables has music by Norman Campbell, lyrics by Donald Harron and Elaine Campbell, book by Donald Harron, and was staged by Alan Lund.

For this album, six of the endearing songs which continue to charm audiences the world over have been selected. The songs included in this album are representative of the story and the many moods of Anne… the vivacious red-haired girl from the Maritimes. Anne Of Green Gables has been hailed as the musical triumph of the summer in Charlottetown.
