Information/Write-up
Bulletproof Nothing were a Winnipeg, Manitoba alternative rock band active in the early-to-mid 1990s, emerging from the city’s tightly knit DIY underground at a time when local artists were increasingly self-recording, self-releasing, and building independent distribution networks outside the mainstream industry.
The band made its first appearance on record with Working the Shortwave (1993), a cassette-only debut released independently by the group. Recorded at Vox Pop Studio in St. Norbert, Manitoba, the tape captured Bulletproof Nothing in their formative stage, presenting early versions of material that would later resurface in more developed form. The cassette reflected the realities of Winnipeg’s underground at the time—limited resources, small-run formats, and a reliance on local studios and collaborators—while establishing the band’s core sound and songwriting identity.
Bulletproof Nothing reached a wider audience with Fizzle and Fade, recorded in January 1995 at God of Thunder Studios and released through Winnipeg’s Sister Records. The album was engineered and balance engineered by Bob Weston and mastered at Mid-Ocean Recording, marking a significant step forward in both production clarity and distribution. Songs such as ‘This Is Asphalt,’ ‘He Mighty,’ and ‘Silhouette’ demonstrated a sharpened approach that bridged post-hardcore tension and alternative rock structure, situating the band firmly within the era’s independent Canadian rock movement.
