Information/Write-up

The earliest Canadian pressings of Permanent Waves featured one of Rush’s most famous—and short-lived—cover variations: the newspaper held by the model originally displayed the notorious 1948 Chicago Daily Tribune headline “Dewey Defeats Truman.” That image was quickly altered after legal objections from the Chicago Tribune, which reportedly threatened action over its reuse, forcing Anthem and the band to obscure the headline on subsequent copies. Hugh Syme later confirmed that the paper was intentionally blanked out because the Tribune still considered the famous misprint an embarrassment and claimed any reproduction could invite litigation. As a result, the uncensored “Dewey Defeats Truman” sleeve became a genuine deleted cover variation, highly prized by collectors and one of the most recognizable anomalies in Rush’s Canadian discography. The original concept also briefly included distant Coca-Cola billboards in the background, which were likewise removed after objections, making the earliest issue doubly notable among variant hunters.
