Information/Write-up
MAINSTREAM
There is certainly nothing flat about the music and the artists which are featured. Indeed one of the most striking qualities of this album is its rich variety of musical styles. This is no accident. The producers have tried to offer a representative cross-section of the type of music currently being played in and around Winnipeg.
In these days of giant recording companies backed by million-dollar budgets it is refreshing to see local studios, with limited resources, making the effort and commitment to record local artists. Although all the featured artists live and work in Winnipeg, however, there is nothing narrow or provincial in their outlook. In fact, listening to the lyrics, one comes to realize that music basically knows no borders. The songs reflect not Manitoban, or Canadian, but universal human needs and values.
This album is like a prairie meadow in mid-summer. It is rich in a variety of tones, possesses a sense of innate strength, and seems to stretch beyond restrictive horizons, reaching out to the skies and the world at large. We hope you enjoy it.

CLUB 939
Rod Struss, Darryl Havers, Glen Stewart, Joe Halas and Glenda Anderson make up Club 939. Havers and Halas write the basic materials which are then workshopped by the band into a final version. Just Because is a jazz-blues fusion featuring some fine piano playing by Darryl Havers and a solid vocal performance by Glenda Anderson. There is a nice unity of tone and mood on this particular track.

Joe Halas: guitar, vocals
Darryl Havers: acoustic piano, vocals

FRANCINE KIRSCH
Francine is well known to Winnipeg audiences. She is an accomplished vocalist and the two songs featured on this album give some idea of her range and style. Sleepless Nights is an up-tempo number with insistent rhythms which emphasize the clarity and force of her voice. Looking Out For Number One is a more sombre, introspective number delivered in a hauntingly dream-like and evocative manner. The orchestration on this track is particularly effective.
Francine Kirsch: vocals
Produced by Steve Gibson and Bill Martin
Engineered by Rich Schirmer at Quadrafonic Sound Studios, Nashville, Tennessee, USA
ELIAS, SCHRITT & BELL
The trio has been together since December, 1980. Steve Bell’s Jenny is a delightful composition featuring delicate intricacies of rhythm and lyrics with excellent harmonies. It Hasn’t Changed, by Tim Elias, experiments with changing rhythm patterns. Again, the harmonies are excellent and overall these two tracks indicate that the group has a lot of potential for producing innovative and original material.
Tim Elias: vocals, acoustic guitar
Steve Bell: vocals, acoustic guitar, bass, saxophone, piano
John Schritt: vocals, saxophone
Gord Metcalfe: drums
Produced by Elias, Schritt & Bell and Howard Rissin
Engineered by Howard Rissin at Roade Recording Studios, Winnipeg, Manitoba
SWEETWATER CREEK
The band is comprised of Gary Dueck, Dave Rensberry, Myron Heibert, Greg Penner and Wes Petters. Their style is something of a surprise. They take basic rock-rhythms from the mid-sixties and wed them to fundamentalist gospel lyrics. The result is a type of rock-gospel-blues which is something of an innovative departure from the traditional ballad approach to gospel music.
Garry Dueck: guitar, vocals
Greg Penner: guitar, vocals
Wes Peters: drums, percussion
Myron Hiebert: bass
Dave Rensberry: keyboards, vocals
Produced by Larry Campbell
Engineered by Dave Zeglinski at Mid-Ocean Recording Studios, Winnipeg, Manitoba
GERRY ST. CYR
Gerry has been playing the coffee-house and concert circuits since 1975. A thoughtful, introspective young man, he writes and arranges a lot of his own material. In the Heart is a soulful jazz-ballad arrangement with some thought-provoking lyrics. Gary Nichols plays a fine lead guitar to counterpoint the underlying jazz rhythms.
Gerry St. Cyr: vocals, acoustic guitar
Produced by Gerry St. Cyr
Engineered by Dave Zeglinski at Mid-Ocean Recording Studios, Winnipeg, Manitoba
