Insight

"Violet Archer was born in Montreal, and studied composition at McGill University under Douglas Clarke and Claude Champagne. Several scholarships enabled her to take up postgraduate studies at Yale University, where one of her teachers was Paul Hindemith. Previously there had been a brief period of study in New York with Bela Bartok.

In the 50's she taught composition, counterpoint and related subjects in Texas, Oklahoma, and Louisiana. Since her return to Canada in 1961, her dinamic personality has been felt in the Canadian West, especially in Alberta, where she was for many years Associate Professor in the Department of Music at the University of Alberta. She is currently chairman of the Division of Theory and Composition. She has written music for orchestra, chamber ensembles, piano, voice, as well as numerous choral works, and has received several commissions from the CBC."
