Insight

KEN DEAN (trumpeter) played with Jim Galloway’s Wee Big Band when they performed the Band’s inaugural concert during the ‘Sound of Toronto Jazz’ Concert Series on February 12, 1979. Since deceased, “Kenny” Dean was a Toronto legend whose Dixieland Band, The Hot Seven, is credited with jump-starting the Toronto scene in 1948 and maintaining the vanguard position on that front throughout the 1950s.

In addition to those he led, Ken Dean played in several bands and ensembles including most of those led by Jim Galloway over decades. He was the father of Canadian jazz saxophone giant, Alex Dean.
