Information/Write-up

Born on March 29, 1957, at the General Hospital in Calgary, Karl was the first child of Arthur and Trudy Roth. Two years later, his sister Annette joined the family, and from the beginning, Karl took on the role of protective older brother with devotion and joy.

Growing up in Calgary in the vibrant 1960s, Karl was an avid sportsman and an enthusiastic member of local clubs and teams. But it was his ear for music and his thirst for knowledge that truly set him apart. A gifted student, Karl not only excelled academically but also found his calling early in life when he chose the violin as his instrument at the Mount Royal College Conservatory of Music.

By age 16, Karl’s talent had already taken him beyond Canadian borders, earning him a summer scholarship to UCLA. That transformative experience cemented his path — music would not just be his passion, but his life’s work. He went on to tour Europe with the Calgary Youth Orchestra and would later perform and record around the world — from New York to Montreal, Australia to intimate venues across Canada. Known for his extraordinary musicality and warm presence on stage, Karl became a sought-after performer, arranger, and studio musician. His various recordings remain a testament to his dedication and artistry.

Despite his many talents and accomplishments, Karl never took himself too seriously. He had an infectious laugh — a booming sound that could break even the most serious faces into a smile — and a mischievous sense of humor that charmed everyone around him. He had a way of turning ordinary moments into unforgettable memories, often with a twinkle in his eye and a plan to get others laughing.

Karl was also a man of deep intellect and curiosity. He learned to read at a very young age and famously requested a children’s set of encyclopedias instead of toy trucks. Many nights he was found under the covers, flashlight in hand, reading page after page well past bedtime.

He loved the mountains and spent time as a ski instructor, sharing his passion and skill on the slopes. He also loved good conversation, open doors, and connecting with people from all walks of life. His home was a haven, always filled with music, laughter, and the comforting presence of a man whose heart was as big as his stature — a true gentle giant.

Above all, Karl was a devoted father. He is survived by his cherished children, Alexander (Sasha) and Nicole (Nicky) Roth, whom he adored beyond words. His love for them was evident in every story he told and every note he played. He also leaves behind his beloved sister Annette, niece, nephew, cousins, and many friends and fellow musicians whose lives he touched deeply.

Karl Roth’s life was one of brilliance, warmth, and generosity. He gave the world his music, his wisdom, his humor, and above all, his love. He will be profoundly missed but never forgotten.
