Insight

Ensemble Infini is an ever-evolving workshop collective led by Montréal drummer, composer, and iconoclast Guy Thouin. Born in 1940, Thouin stands as a towering figure in Québec’s countercultural music history. A driving force behind seminal groups such as Le Quatuor de jazz libre du Québec and L’Infonie, he has also collaborated with artists including Robert Charlebois, Sonny Greenwich, and Steve Roach. Now in his mid-eighties, Thouin continues to radiate the same creative vitality that fueled his earliest work, embracing new cross-generational collaborations through Ensemble Infini.

Rooted in Thouin’s expansive vision of free jazz, Ensemble Infini performs bespoke arrangements of his compositions, drawing from every phase of his long career. Their debut album, Volume ∞, was released by Cellar Music on May 1, 2026, on CD and digital formats, with a 2xLP edition scheduled for August 7, 2026.

The album brings together driving improvisation, molten psychedelia, and abstract atmospherics, extending the exploratory spirit the group has already demonstrated in acclaimed live performances, including their 2023 appearance at FIMAV. In the studio, Ensemble Infini expands that energy through overdubs, electronic treatments, synthesizers, and collage-like approaches, drawing in part from an archive of live and residency recordings while retaining the immediacy and vitality of performance.
