Take On the Tyrants celebrates nearly five decades of D.O.A., one of Canada’s most important and enduring punk bands. Released by Sudden Death Records, the compilation gathers 33 tracks on the double LP edition, with a 30-track CD version also issued. Drawing from more than 18 studio albums, the set offers a hard-hitting overview of a band that helped define hardcore punk while never losing its political edge, humour, or sense of purpose.
From early essentials like “The Enemy,” “Disco Sucks,” “New Age,” “The Prisoner,” and “World War 3,” through later anthems such as “General Strike,” “Class War,” “All the President’s Men,” “You Can’t Stop Me,” and “Pipeline Fever,” the album shows the remarkable consistency of D.O.A.’s voice. The songs move from anti-authoritarian protest to working-class anger, from street-level humour to blunt political confrontation, all powered by the same direct, no-nonsense energy that has carried the band since 1978.
Led by Joe “Shithead” Keithley, D.O.A. have played more than 4,500 shows in 50 countries across five continents, earning their long-standing reputation as one of punk rock’s most relentless live acts. But Take On the Tyrants is not simply a greatest-hits package. It is a compressed history of Keithley’s larger philosophy: think for yourself, be your own boss, and use music as a force for positive change. That spirit runs through both D.O.A. and Sudden Death Records, where independence, heart, and conviction have always mattered as much as volume.
The vinyl edition adds three exclusive tracks — “Whatcha Gonna Do?,” “They Hate Punk Rock,” and “You Won’t Stand Alone” — making the double LP the most complete version of the release. Packaged with bold guitar-front artwork and live-stage imagery, the album feels exactly like D.O.A. should: battered, defiant, and impossible to ignore.
After 48 years, D.O.A. still sound like a band with something to prove. Take On the Tyrants captures the spirit behind the slogan Talk minus action equals zero — a reminder that for D.O.A., punk rock has always been more than noise. It is resistance, humour, survival, and action.

Hi friends, glad you've dropped in on us at Sudden Death. Playing in D.O.A. and running the label have been a life long dream come true. I get to produce great music, help the world hear that music and have a ton of fun at the same time. But I didn't get here by accident, myself and my comrades in D.O.A. we worked our asses off. I'm talking about all the D.O.A. members and crew, past and present and of course all the staff at Sudden Death. Here at SDR, we don't sign that many bands, but if I hear something I think is unique and has a lot of heart, then it's a go. Because the coolest thing about music is the freedom it gives you mentally and philosophically, that's what got me into all of this when I was 11 years old and that's what still drives me forward today.
Finally, this is the other part I really dig, the opportunity to say what I think about the world. When I look at a hero of mine: Woody Guthrie, he traveled like a hobo by train, criss-crossing this great continent of ours, speaking to people, hearing their problems and that's what he ended up singing about: the people. I, in my own small way, have tried to do the same thing, at times it was a pretty rough road, but that's how I learned and understood that if you ask for a little, you don't get a lot. Almost everybody in this world aspires to do some good and I believe that we all can help make this world into a better place than it is now!
