This music album was created by many different artists, sharing the same desire to express themselves in a positive way and to spread music all around. This is our first professional recording; hopefully, it will show other youth around the Arctic that it is possible and fun
Enjoy and be inspired!
The Artcirq Inuit Performance Collective is based in Igloolik, Nunavut, a remote Inuit community of 1,700 people in Canada’s Eastern Arctic. The collective was established in 1998, with the goal of providing Inuit youth a vehicle for creative expression through theater, video-making, music and circus arts, all while maintaining a strong link to Inuit traditions and performance styles
Made up of both Inuit and non-Inuit artists collaborating across languages and cultures, the collective has been in existence for almost 10 years
The goals and objectives of the Artcirq collective are to:
Integrate the roots of traditional Inuit performance culture, acrobatics, juggling, clowning, music, throat-singing, to the techniques of modern circus and theatre
Give young Inuit access to universal vehicles of creativity and communication offered by the performing arts, such as circus, video and music, to promote intergenerational and intercultural exchanges
Promote spiritual and physical self-expression while enhancing the self-esteem of participants
Deliver initiation workshops on circus and performing arts in the village of Igloolik
Create shows with the youth of Artcirq and guest artists; present them in Nunavut and in the rest of the world
Document all the experiences on video and produce short films with the collaboration of Igloolik Isuma Productions; screen them on tour and share them on the web site
Cooperate with the local youth groups and artists in Igloolik to increase the communication tools for youth in order to prevent suicide
Increase awareness on global environmental issues generally, and on Arctic’s climate warming specifically
