Catherine McKinnon was born in Saint John, New Brunswick. She made her name singing 'Farewell to Nova Scotia' on Halifax television, and twenty years after putting 'Cape Breton Lullaby' on her first album, she was singing about Cape Breton again. This time she was doing it in Toronto.
She found the songs of Maritimer Bob Quinn through a television special on the arrival of the Tall Ships. She cut two of them with Paul Zaza, who produced and arranged both sides for ZSP, the label he had started with Berandol back in 1973. The labels mark 'Sail On' as Side A and 'My Love, Cape Breton and Me' as Side AA, so neither song was meant to be the B-side.
The press sheet that went out with the record asked the question fans had been asking for three years: when is Catherine McKinnon going to record again? It promised an album for fall 1984, pitched the two songs to adult contemporary, country and "multi-formatted" stations, and pointed out that the record was four parts Canadian content.

“When is Catherine McKinnon going to record again?” The question has been asked frequently in the past three years. Busy with concerts, legitimate theatre and guest shots on television, that unique sound described by many as the best female voice in Canada, is back on a brand new disc.
It was through a television special celebrating the arrival of the tall ships that Catherine discovered the music of Maritimer Bob Quinn. The enclosed two selections are eloquent proof of that meaningful discovery.
“Sail On” and “My Love, Cape Breton and Me” are the first singles from an album in progress which is due for a fall ’84 release. The recordings were produced by writer/musician, Paul Zaza. Four parts Canadian content, the enclosed two sides lend themselves to adult contemporary, country and multi-formatted stations.
