Insight

The music for “Tenement” was written after the lyrics had already been finished. It is a song of an era where what we know as democracy is revealing itself to be a futile political theatre. It was made in sympathy with those who feel there is no hope. “Tenement” provides a reminder that complacency makes for frogs in boiling water and that shared grievances are a virtue in collective unrest.

Credits

lyrics I used to have a penchant for anger
Abidance swallowed it down
Now everything only tastes bitter
At least it gives me levity
At a time my dreams held hope for the better
But they were whittled down
With the knives of their spectators
Now I just pray for their brevity
Disillusionment
Clings to our final comforts
In the tenement
The lamps flicker like fireworks
To the distant gaze
Of a permanent incumbent
With a lustrum shifting face
By design our youth will go to waste
The lie is that this is our nature
Although implanted with numbness
We weep for what is done to our neighbour
What we call necessity
Our greatest failure is not seeing this as failure
Because immutable silence
Maintains us favourites to the slaver
Who manufactured scarcity
Disillusionment
Clings to our final comforts
In the tenement
The lamps flicker like fireworks
To the distant gaze
Of a permanent incumbent
With a lustrum shifting face
By design our youth will go to waste
By and by our youth will go to waste credits released June 27, 2025
