Theo Vandenhoff began as the stage name of Toronto singer, songwriter and synthesizer player Theo Klaver and grew into a three-piece post-punk band with guitarist Callum Crombie and bassist Tom Nixon, two musicians from Leeds, England. The group bills its music as "dark & romantic Toronto post-punk": cold drum machines, Bass VI and twelve-string guitar under Klaver's deep, theatrical croon, with lyrics that reach for painting, film, fado and the history of war.
Klaver was born in May 2000 and grew up on music his father played him: OMD, New Order, Wire, the Chameleons, DAF, Nick Cave and Severed Heads, the crooners Scott Walker, Bryan Ferry, Serge Gainsbourg and Jacques Brel, and the synthesizer music of Kraftwerk, Harald Grosskopf, Brian Eno and the Berlin School. He was drawn to bands that made music of real weight without technical virtuosity, and to the idea that a synthesizer could be as personal an instrument as a voice. His favourite album was OMD's Architecture & Morality, which he heard as the meeting point of British post-punk and synth-pop.
He started making music at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, writing alone at home. His debut EP, Heartache Is An Empty Room, came out on April 2, 2021, five songs about paranoia, uncertainty and sleepless introspection. Klaver sang and played guitar, bass, Moog Sub 37, Roland JX-03 and Nord Lead 2X and programmed the drums. Jay Merrow produced, added guitar, synths and programming, and co-wrote 'What's In A Name?'. Matt Rideout mastered the record and Isabel Glasgow drew the cover. Alongside the self-released digital edition, the Toronto label Safe Sounds issued it on neon-yellow cassette (SS111), limited to 50 copies. The fourth track, 'Lift', reworked a song by Invisible College, the Toronto synth-pop duo of Eric Klaver and Bob Hanley, who had released it on a 2003 EP.
As live music returned, Klaver assembled a band to play the songs on stage. In March 2022 he opened for the English anti-folk act Crywank at an all-ages show in Toronto, held in a corporate arcade venue where a business networking event was still going on during soundcheck. He called it terrible vibes but a fun show, and it won him new fans. The single 'Alles Ist Besser' followed in June. That July he told Ian MacPherson of The GO-GO Radio Magic Show that playing live was cathartic but "junk food," while recording was the harder work that paid off, and that he had begun writing with his band. Off stage he went birdwatching at Samuel Smith Park and Tommy Thompson Park and kept the script of Waiting For Godot as a favourite book. On October 4, 2022, he opened for the German post-punk veterans Pink Turns Blue at the Garrison on Dundas Street West.
By 2023 the band was Klaver on vocals and synthesizers, Crombie on guitar, Nixon on bass and Sava Solar on drums. The single 'Rosetta' was followed on September 28 by 'Temper', released independently with a cheeky, raunchy video. Klaver said the band gave him a warm, pulsing backdrop to sing his vulnerability over: "It's a new dynamic and it works, it feels like an exorcism." In November and December the group crossed the Atlantic as support on Crywank's tour of Britain and Ireland, roughly two dozen dates that took in Plymouth, Cardiff, Sheffield's Foundry, the Brudenell Social Club in Leeds, Broadcast in Glasgow, the Caves in Edinburgh, Norwich and the Ulster Sports Club in Belfast. A reviewer who caught them in a 275-capacity pub on the edge of Plymouth described Klaver as looking like a cross between Nick Cave and David Bowie and prowling the stage like Mick Jagger.
In The Throes Of Love was self-released on January 12, 2024, with a limited first pressing on 180-gram translucent red vinyl. The title song began as a synth-pop home demo built on the arpeggio from Haruomi Hosono's 'Sportsmen' and grew into a song about falling in love at the wrong time. Its video was written and directed by Klaver's partner, Ireland Egan, with cinematography by Nick Tiringer. The EP moved from the gothic ballad 'Rosetta' to the driving 'Temper', 'Evening Star' and the near seven-minute 'Eternity (Looking Skyward)'. Klaver sang and played synths and drum programming, Crombie played electric and acoustic guitars, Nixon played bass, Bass VI, synths, Casiotone and upright piano, and Solar played drums. Jay Merrow returned on synth programming, Murray Heaton played tenor saxophone on 'Temper' and 'Rosetta', and Egan and Sameeya Amyot joined the gang vocals that close the record. The gear list ran from a Roland Juno 106 and a Sequential Prophet Rev-2 to a Silvertone guitar amp and a fuzz pedal Crombie and Nixon built themselves.
A Fear Immortal followed on November 22, 2024, three songs built on programmed industrial drums and hypnotic dance rhythms: 'Fear Immortal', 'Elegia, Florida' and 'The Factory'. The last threads spoken samples of military indoctrination through the story of a young soldier who crawls home from his victory in shame. Klaver wrote the lyrics, and the three members composed and produced the music together. Nixon and Crombie recorded it and Nixon mixed and mastered it. The cover used Gut Wood's illustration 'Skeletal Veil', with a Theo Vandenhoff logo lettered by Sofie Hamelin and design by Klaver and Nixon.
Toronto's Artoffact Records took the band on in 2025. Collected EPs, issued digitally on May 2 and on CD that July, gathered all three EPs and 'Alles Ist Besser' into 14 tracks, running from the newest material back to the bedroom recordings of 2021. A new single, 'Tenement', appeared in June and was later included on the label's 2025 sampler. '(Portrait Of) Amália Rodrigues', named for the Portuguese fado singer, arrived with a video on December 13, and a lyric video for 'Wong Kar-Wai', named for the Hong Kong filmmaker, followed on January 23, 2026.
Saviour On The Spilled Blood, the band's first full-length album, was released by Artoffact on April 10, 2026, on CD, digital and dark blood-red vinyl. Klaver, Crombie and Nixon produced it, Crombie and Nixon engineered it, Nixon mixed it, Jeff Hartling mastered it and Adam Willett supplied the artwork. Its title is the name of the St. Petersburg church built where Tsar Alexander II was assassinated. Klaver said the trio had spent years writing single after single while working out what a Theo Vandenhoff LP should be, and that most of the lyrics began as poems written to the prompt "original sin," blending "the intensely personal with the political, the animal with the existential."
The ten songs run from the opener 'April Showers' and the title track through the clipped 'Wong Kar-Wai', under three minutes, to the seven-minute 'I Wish I Was A Painter'. 'Below The Western Steppe', '(Portrait Of) Amália Rodrigues', 'Mer Champlain', 'House In The Country' and 'Foreign Legion' complete the record. 'Mer Champlain' carries the French name of the prehistoric sea that once flooded the Ottawa and St. Lawrence valleys.
The band's next European tour is scheduled for February 2027. It is set to open at the Lanes in Bristol on February 2 and reach the Attic in Leeds, home ground for Crombie and Nixon, the next night, with shows also scheduled at the Old Blue Last in London, La Marbrerie in Paris and Neue Zukunft in Berlin.

On their debut full-length record, Saviour on the Spilled Blood, Toronto post-punk outfit Theo Vandenhoff delivers a meticulously crafted exploration of identity and existentialism. The album serves as a definitive statement of the trio's evolution, moving beyond their early singles to master a cohesive sound that fluidly traverses various genres without losing its core intensity. The result is a work of striking confidence, marking a sophisticated new chapter for the band.
"The three of us have been writing music together for a couple of years now, we've spent all this time writing single after single and figuring out what an LP from us should look like. Saviour on the Spilled Blood is a culmination of all this time spent honing our craft; teaching ourselves how to traverse a handful of subgenres without compromising congruence. There is a noticeable confidence in these recordings that we're very proud of. Most of the lyrics on Saviour began as poems written from the prompt "original sin", my aim was to tell a story that blends the intensely personal with the political, the animal with the existential." - Theo Klaver
