Liner notes
A car door slams shut and two pairs of feet dash across the asphalt parking lot, dodge around an XK-E and a matched pair of MGs and end up at a Green Door.
The Green Door opens and the mod blonde in a glow of psychedelic colour and a pair of crazy shades slips into the darkness hand in hand with a guy in tails.
They push their way through a crowd covered with Carleton University ribbons and move out in front of the stage where five musicians are standing.
Vibrations — rock vibrations, Beatle vibrations, Rolling Stone vibrations — circulate in the dark crowded room.
Guitar strings and drum skins quiver. Then The Staccatos sound, a weird sound, an exciting sound. The blonde dances slowly at first, then faster. The crowd stirs and moves under the hypnotic spell.
There in the blue mist of cigarette smoke, among the pulsating lights, the mini-skirts, the beat, the clash of cymbals, students, lawyers, milkmen and electronic sounds, The Staccatos are home.
Vern Craig, second from the front, is the leader of the group — The Staccatos, the group from Ottawa that played for the Queen. There are five of them. Vern plays the guitar, at least while Les is on stage. On stage he sometimes plays Monopoly.
Les Emmerson, number three, plays guitar too and sings. The bass player is Brian Rading, number four, a young lad who digs old movies.
Rick Bell, in front, the drummer, would rather be outdoors wandering. There’s another drummer in the group, Mike Bell, Rick’s brother. He’s shy and won’t tell us anything. (That’s why he’s hiding in back.)
