This album marked Shari Ulrich’s first full collection of original songs, following the success of ‘Feel Good,’ the first song she had written, which appeared on the second Hometown Band album. Having long wanted to write her own material, Ulrich entered this period with a clear sense of purpose: to create songs that could reach radio while avoiding predictable pop formulas.
As Ulrich later recalled, she was “aiming for left of centre and airplay” and was determined not to write the usual boy-girl cliché pop song. The material from this album formed part of an especially productive early solo period, with her next thirty songs spread across her first three solo albums.
Produced by Claire Lawrence, the album brought together a strong West Coast studio lineup, including Harris Van Berkel, Peter Clarke, David Pickell, Ron Johnson, Geoff Eyre, and Nancy Nash. Recorded at Pinewood Studios in Vancouver and mixed at Le Studio in Morin Heights, Quebec, it established Ulrich’s solo voice as a songwriter while retaining the instrumental depth and melodic intelligence that had already made her such a distinctive presence in Canadian music.
